MOVER’S SPOTLIGHT

Name: Karina Pavone

New position: Executive director of Amigos For Kids.

From: Associate dean, School of Continuing Education and Professional Development at Miami Dade College.

About: Pavone has been a therapist as well as a nonprofit and higher-education administrator for 25 years. She has held various leadership roles throughout her career, including 16 years with Miami Dade College.

Also: She follows the organization’s interim president and CEO, Lydia Muñiz, who stepped in to lead the organization after the unexpected passing in October 2018 of its longtime president and CEO, Rosa Maria Plasencia. There were more than 300 applicants for the position; the board of directors unanimously selected Pavone.

Education: She has a master’s in psychology from Florida International University; and a master’s, and a doctorate, in clinical psychology from Albizu University.

About Amigos For Kids: Founded in 1991, the organization’s mission is to prevent child abuse and neglect by valuing children, strengthening families and educating communities. Amigos offers an after-school program at José Martí Park that serves children ages 6-11 daily, and also offers its “Nurturing Parents Program” that serves families throughout the region. Amigos For Kids also organizes one of the community’s largest holiday toy drives..

Best advice: At a young age my parents said to me “Find something you love to do and figure out a way to make a living doing it.” My parents always instilled a sense of service to others and that is why I pursued a service profession.
