An emotionally fraught bill that its opponents dub the “Don’t say gay” bill and that its Republican backers counter the “Parental Rights in Education” bill has now been passed with a divided Senate.
On Tuesday, the Senate voted 22-17 to pass the measure. Two Republicans, Sens. Jeff Brandes and Jennifer Bradley, voted against it along with Democrats.
The proposal now heads to Gov. Ron DeSantis’ desk for his expected signature.
Before the vote, the bill’s sponsor, Sen. Dennis Baxley, R-Ocala, implored the Senate to vote in favor of its passage.
In a video from the Senate floor on Tuesday, Baxley says: “I look at these kids. They are our hope. They are our future. And, yeah, they are growing in very confusing times. ... So whether we agree or not on all these pathways let’s agree to help them get there and build that future for Florida and for America.”
Democrats disagree with Baxley’s concern about a school’s ability to influence a child’s identity.
“Do we really think that teachers are engineering students to become gay?” said Sen. Tina Polsky, D-Boca Raton. “It’s preposterous.”
