As Hurricane Milton heads toward the west coast of Florida, South Florida school districts are sharing their plans regarding school closures.
For Miami-Dade public schools, classes will be in session on Tuesday but school activities after 6 p.m. will be suspended and parents are encouraged to pick up children as early as possible from after-care programs. School is canceled on Wednesday and Thursday and district offices will be closed as well, the district announced.
In Broward, the District sent out a message that schools will be open Tuesday but district offices will close at 4 p.m., and all after-school activities, including evening classes, are canceled. Broward schools as well as district offices will be closed Wednesday and Thursday.
School will resume Friday, but any updates will be posted via the District’s ParentLink platform, social media or www.browardschools.com
The District also announced that its Magnet Program Expo, scheduled for Thursday at Nova Southeastern University in Davie, will be postponed.
Palm Beach County schools announced Monday afternoon that schools will also be closed Wednesday and Thursday of this week. “Extracurricular activities, after-care programs, sports, school meetings, and other on-campus events are also canceled Wednesday, October 9 and Thursday, October 10,” they said in a statement.
Hurricane Milton rapidly strengthened into a major hurricane Monday morning, days ahead of its expected landfall on Florida’s west coast as a Category 3, where it could bring up to 12 feet of storm surge, the Herald reported. Most of Florida’s Gulf Coast is under a hurricane or tropical storm watch, although the latest forecast still keeps the eye of the storm crossing ashore near Sarasota sometime late Wednesday.
Some mandatory evacuations have already been called in Manatee, Pasco and Pinellas Counties, but more are expected Monday and Tuesday ahead of Milton’s arrival.
How Hurricane Milton will affect South Florida remains to be seen, the worst of the wind and rain is expected mid-week. The Florida Department of Education’s website keeps track of district closures; so far the closures are mainly in western and central counties in Florida.
