Meet the Miami Dolphins’ 2020 NFL Draft picks
The NFL Draft has come and gone, and the Miami Dolphins have 11 new players after the three-day, seven-round event concluded.
Here’s the Dolphins’ full list of drafted players.
1 (5) Tua Tagovailoa
Position: Quarterback
College: Alabama Crimson Tide
Height: 6-1
Weight: 218 lbs
Stats: 69.3 percent completion (474/684), 7,442 passing yards, 87 passing touchdowns, 11 interceptions; 340 rushing yards, 9 rushing touchdowns
Comment: After all the hoopla and wondering and debating, the Dolphins have the quarterback they wanted all along. Now that he’s here, will he live up to the hype and will the injuries from the past stay in the past?
1 (18) Austin Jackson
▪ Position: Offensive tackle
▪ College: USC Trojans
▪ Height: 6-5
▪ Weight: 322 lbs
▪ Stats: 39 games, 25 starts (all at left tackle); first-team All-Pac 12 in 2019.
▪ Comment: After selecting hopeful franchise quarterback Tagovailoa at No. 5, the Dolphins invest in improving their offensive line with the 18th pick. He started at left tackle each of his final two years with the Trojans and will add depth at a needed position for Miami.
1 (30) Noah Igbinoghene
Position: Cornerback
College: Auburn
Height: 5-10
Weight: 198 lbs
Stats: 92 tackles, 1 interception, 18 defended passes
Comment: The Dolphins close out Day 1 by adding to their secondary. Igbinoghene, the son of two former Nigerian Olympians, moved to cornerback as a sophomore after starting his career at Auburn as a wide receiver. He’ll likely compete with Nik Needham to play nickel, complementing the outside corner tandem of Byron Jones and Xavien Howard.
2 (39) Robert Hunt
Position: Tackle/guard
School: Louisiana
Height: 6-5
Weight: 323 lbs
Stats: 45 starts at left guard, left tackle and right tackle; first-team all-Sun Belt Conference in 2019
Comment: The Dolphins continue their commitment to protecting new quarterback Tagovailoa by grabbing the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns offensive lineman. Hunt played both guard and tackle in his time in Lafayette before an injury cut short his senior season after just seven games.
2 (56) Raekwon Davis
Position: Defensive tackle
School: Alabama
Height: 6-6
Weight: 311 lbs
Stats: 48 games, 175 tackles, 19.5 tackles for loss, 11.5 sacks, 1 interception
Comment: Davis gives the Dolphins needed depth on the interior of their defensive line, where Christian Wilkins, Davon Godchaux and Zach Sieler are the only NFL-caliber defensive tackles on their roster. His immediate NFL goal: Win rookie of the year.
3 (70) Brandon Jones
Position: Safety
School: Texas
Height: 5-11
Weight: 198 lbs
Stats: 232 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 3 interceptions, 7 passes defended, 3 fumble recoveries, 2 forced fumbles
Comment: Versatility and intelligence are the two selling points for Jones, who was a three-year starter for the Texas Longhorns. The defensive back played all over the secondary in Austin and could be a deep safety, in-the-box safety or even a slot cornerback for the Dolphins in the NFL, although he is coming back from a shoulder injury.
4 (111) Solomon Kindley
Position: Offensive line
School: Georgia Bulldogs
Height: 6-3
Weight: 337 lbs
Stats: 43 games, 32 starts, primarily at guard
Comment: The Dolphins continue adding to their offensive line with Kindley, who was a three-year starter primarily at guard for the Bulldogs. Three of Miami’s first seven picks have been on the offensive line. Kindley is also Miami’s fourth selection from a Southeastern Conference school.
5 (154) Jason Strowbridge
Position: Defensive lineman
School: North Carolina
Height: 6-4
Weight: 275 lbs
Stats: 123 tackles, 22 tackles for loss, 10 1/2 sacks, 3 passes defended, 2 forced fumbles, 3 fumble recoveries (1 returned for touchdown) in 42 games
Comment: Strowbridge began his career as a defensive tackle, but moved to defensive end as a senior for the North Carolina Tar Heels and he could be a fit at either postiion in the NFL. Originally from Deerfield Beach High School, Strowbridge was one of the most impressive defensive linemen at the 2020 Senior Bowl in January, which helped solidify his place as a third-day pick in the NFL Draft.
5 (164) Curtis Weaver
Position: Edge rusher
College: Boise State
Height: 6-2
Weight: 265 lbs
Stats: 128 tackles, 47 1/2 tackles for loss, 34 sacks, 2 interceptions, 6 passes defended, 3 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery in 40 games
Comment: Weaver recorded at least 9 1/2 sacks in each of the three seasons he played for the Boise State Broncos -- 11 as a redshirt freshman, followed by 9 1/2 as a redshirt sophomore and 13 as a redshirt junior. Weaver, who can play both outside linebacker and defensive end, finished his career as the Mountain West Conference’s all-time sacks leader, although his relative lack of size and athleticism caused him to drop to Day 3.
6 (185) Blake Ferguson
Position: Long snapper
School: LSU Tigers
Height: 6-3
Weight: 229 lbs
Comment: Ferguson played in 53 games for the Tigers and was the first long snapper in LSU history to be named a team captain in Tigers football history. He also had a tangential connection to the Dolphins. Ferguson’s brother is Buffalo Bills long snapper Reid Ferguson, who was once coached by now Dolphins special teams coach Danny Crossman.
7 (246) Malcolm Perry
Position: Running back/Wide receiver
School: Navy
Height: 5-9
Weight: 186 lbs
Comment: Versatility is Perry’s greatest asset. He played quarterback and running back at Navy, racking up 4,359 rushing yards and 40 touchdowns while also throwing for 1,311 yards and 10 touchdowns in limited passing duties. The Dolphins could look at him at both running back and receiver.
