Poll: Which high school athlete should be the Miami Herald’s Player of the Week? (April 17)

As the 2021-22 high school spring sports begin their respective postseasons, more notable performances by South Florida’s best athletes highlighted this past week.

This week, we continue a weekly feature where we ask you to vote for the best performer of the week in South Florida high school sports.

Below is a look at the five candidates from last week’s action. Take our poll below to cast your vote. The poll will be open until Thursday, April 21, around 10 p.m. You may vote as often as you like until then.

Here are the candidates from last week’s events:

Michael Torres, Doral Academy, baseball: Torres went a combined 5 for 7 with seven RBI to lead the Firebirds to wins over Braddock and Keys Gate. He also struck out six in 2⅓ innings to pick up a save in a win over La Salle and struck out three more in a win over Homestead.

Kristen Caravaca, Cooper City, softball: Caravaca went 3 for 3 with two doubles, three RBI and a run scored to lead the Cowboys to a 5-3 win over Coral Springs Charter in the BCAA Big 8 championship.

Carlos Veccio, Belen, boys’ water polo: Veccio scored three of his five goals in the second half to lead the Wolverines to a 19-10 win over Gulliver and a berth in the state semifinals.

Chris Arroyo, Stoneman Douglas, baseball: Arroyo was named the tournament MVP of the 2022 USA Baseball National High School Invitational after leading the Eagles to the championship. Douglas was the first Florida team to win the event since 2014 and outscored its opponents 43-4 in four wins.

Isabella Rojas, La Salle, girls’ tennis: Rojas dominated her No. 1 singles match 6-1, 6-1 and then won a tough No. 1 doubles match with teammate Mariana Naranjo 5-7, 6-3 (10-5) to secure district championships in both divisions.
