This week, we continue a weekly feature where we ask you to vote for the best performer of the week in South Florida high school sports.
Below is a look at the five candidates from last week’s action. Take our poll below to cast your vote. The poll will be open until Thursday, April 28, around 10 p.m. You may vote as often as you like until then.
Here are the candidates from last week’s events:
▪ Jesus Moreno, Southwest, baseball: With their ace unavailable and starter struggling, Moreno pitched five one-hit innings, retiring the final 14 batters in order to help the Eagles secure an 8-2 win over Miami Springs and their first GMAC title since 2011.
▪ Carlos Veccio, Belen Jesuit, boys’ water polo: Veccio again led the Wolverines with 14 combined goals including a game-high nine in the state final to lead Belen to its first state championship since 2016 and fourth overall.
▪ Ray Bermudez, American Heritage, baseball: Bermudez went a combined 5 for 9 in wins over Westminster Christian, Palm Beach Gardens Dwyer and Hialeah Educational last week. Against Westminster, Bermudez homered and finished with three RBI while against Hialeah Educational he hit a key double and drove in two runs.
▪ Zaria Wright, Palmetto, softball: Wright was consistent at the plate throughout the GMAC tournament, going 7 for 9 with seven RBI to lead the Panthers to wins over Goleman, Miami Springs and Coral Reef. Her efforts led Palmetto to its third GMAC crown in five years.
▪ Jason Wachs, West Broward, baseball: Wachs struck out six over four innings and went 1 for 3 with a double and three RBI to lead the Bobcats to a 12-6 win over Archbishop McCarthy.
