Live updates: No. 13 Miami Hurricanes beat Virginia Tech Hokies 34-17
Carson Beck has been adamant about what the Miami Hurricanes’ approach has to be right now.
Play their game. Win every down, every rep, every moment. Showcase their strengths.
“With each opportunity that we’re given,” Beck said Wednesday, “we just need to execute.”
The Hurricanes, for a third consecutive week since suffering their second loss of the season, have executed.
Beck, in particular, has executed.
And it’s keeping Miami’s hopes of reaching the College Football Playoff alive as the Hurricanes, ranked No. 13 in the latest CFP rankings, beat the Virginia Tech Hokies 34-17 on Saturday at Lane Stadium.
Miami improved to 9-2 (5-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference play) heading into a pivotal regular-season finale at Pittsburgh next Saturday. Virginia Tech falls to 3-8 (2-5 ACC).
Miami responds
Carson Beck 16-yard TD pass to Girard Pringle.
27-10 Miami over VT, 5:32 left in the third quarter.
That’s three TD passes from Beck so far Saturday.
Virginia Tech scores to start second half
Jeffrey Overton scores a 38-yard rushing touchdown for Virginia Tech to start the second half.
One play earlier, Bobby Pruitt was called for a facemask on what would have been a fourth-down stop to keep the Hokies’ drive alive.
It’s just the seventh rushing touchdown Miami has allowed this season.
The Hurricanes’ lead is cut to 20-10 with 11:59 left in the third quarter.
Halftime
Miami leads Virginia Tech 20-3 at halftime.
The Hurricanes have outscored opponents 58-3 in the first half the past three weeks
14-0 vs. Syracuse
24-0 vs. NC State
And now 20-3 at Virginia Tech
Another Miami field goal
Canes tack on three more points on a 40-yard Caleb Davis field goal. Malachi Toney’s 56-yard catch-and-run set up the score.
It’s 20-3 Miami over Virginia Tech with 37 seconds left in the first half
Canes force a punt late in first half
An interesting sequence...
*VT tries to go for it on 4th & 1*
*UM timeout*
*VT tries to go for it on 4th & 1 again*
*UM gets stop BUT unsportsmanlike conducts on play AND refs review the 3rd-down catch before it; play didn’t count*
*Play upheld*
*VT tries to go for it on 4th & 1 AGAIN*
*VT converts*
Canes get the stop and force a punt, now have a chance to pad their lead.
Miami tacks on
The Hurricanes drove down the field with some exciting offense — including a Malachi Toney pass on a trick play and a run out of the wildcat — but the drive stalls in the red zone.
Running back Mark Fletcher Jr., however, was called for unsportsmanlike conduct after he straight up dropped a VT defender after a third down incompletion.
Carter Davis hit a 46-yard field goal attempt after all that.
17-3 Miami over VT, 4:16 left in the second quarter.
Canes force turnover on downs
Virginia Tech goes for it on 4th and 2 from the Miami 23.
Canes defense gets the stop. Bobby Pruitt on the tackle.
Miami, up 14-3, has the chance to blow this open.
Jakobe Thomas hurt
Hurricanes safety Jakobe Thomas, who has forced four turnovers the past two weeks, was hurt on Miami’s second defensive drive. He walked off with a trainer and left the field. Sounds like he could be going to get X rays. Appears to be his arm or wrist.
Meanwhile, linebacker Wesley Bissainthe left earlier with injury but has returned.
Welcome back Mark Fletcher Jr.
Touchdown Hurricanes. Carson Beck to Mark Fletcher Jr. for 3 yards on third and goal to cap a 14 play, 75-yard drive.
It’s 14-3 Miami over Virginia Tech with 12:50 left in the second quarter.
Beck is 10 for 10 for 110 yards and two touchdowns today. He has completed 23 consecutive passes going back to the end of the NC State game. His previous career best was 16 done at Georgia.
Miami driving as first quarter ends
The Hurricanes have once again marched down the field on their second drive.
They are at the Hokies’ 11-yard line at the end of the first quarter. They’ve converted a third down and a fourth down on this drive, with offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson mixing some things up with his playcalling.
Defense holds Hokies to field goal
Virginia Tech started with great field position after a short kickoff and unsportsmanlike conduct penalty by Miami and got inside the UM 30 on its first play from scrimmage.
Miami still leads 7-3 with 6:18 left in the first quarter.
Canes open with a touchdown
Carson Beck to tight end Elija Lofton for a 20-yard TD. It capped an eight-play, 75-yard drive. Lofton caught two passes and had a rush on the opening play of the drive.
Good to see Lofton getting involved more. Had a TD vs. NC State last week, too.
Keelan Marion had two catches for 39 yards on the drive as well.
It’s 7-0 Miami over Virginia Tech with 10:16 left in the first quarter.
Injury updates
CJ Daniels and Mark Fletcher Jr. should both be good to go. David Blay is out. OJ Frederique, who is listed as a game-time decision, is trending toward missing his fourth consecutive game.
