A look at Hurricanes’ College GameDay history, from appearances to guest pickers
College GameDay is coming to Miami.
ESPN’s traveling college football pregame show will be on the University of Miami campus Saturday morning ahead of the No. 4 Hurricanes’ home game against the Florida Gators at Hard Rock Stadium (7:30 p.m., ABC).
The show, which features host Rece Davis and analysts Desmond Howard, Nick Saban, Pat McAfee and Kirk Herbstreit, runs from 9 a.m. to noon every college football Saturday from the site of a game ESPN chooses based on “competitive matchups, rivalries and other factors.” Lee Corso, who had been on the show since its inception, made his final appearance in Week 1 of the season.
The Hurricanes are no stranger to being part of the show, which started in 1987 but began traveling on Nov. 13, 1993, for a top-two matchup between Florida State and host Notre Dame.
Here’s a look at UM’s history with College GameDay.
How many times have the Miami Hurricanes been part of College GameDay?
Saturday will be the Hurricanes’ 26th time being featured on College GameDay.
While that’s a respectable number, it’s only the 15th most all-time. Ohio State has the most appearances at 67, followed by Alabama (60), Florida (43), Oklahoma (42), Michigan (41), Georgia (41), Notre Dame (40), Florida State (36), LSU (36) and Oregon (32) rounding out the top 10.
How many times have the Miami Hurricanes hosted College GameDay?
Saturday will mark the ninth time the Hurricanes have been the host team for College GameDay and the first since Sept. 26, 2020, for a matchup against the Florida State Seminoles.
This weekend will be just the second time that the pregame show will be live from the University of Miami campus in Coral Gables. The other was Nov. 11, 2017, for a Miami-Notre Dame contest. The show was live from outside the Orange Bowl the first six times that Miami hosted GameDay.
The first eight appearances, starting with the most recent, were...
-Sept. 26, 2020: Miami vs. Florida State
-Nov. 11, 2017: Miami vs. Notre Dame
-Sept. 4, 2006: Miami vs. Florida State
-Nov. 17, 2001: Miami vs. Syracuse
-Nov. 4, 2000: Miami vs. Virginia Tech
-Oct. 7, 2000: Miami vs. Florida State
-Dec. 5, 1998: Miami vs. UCLA
-Oct. 8, 1994: Miami vs. Florida State
While this is the ninth time the Hurricanes have been the host team for GameDay, it’s the 20th College GameDay overall in Miami. This includes five national championships and six Orange Bowl games, including four since the College Football Playoff format began and the Orange Bowl rotated in as a semifinal.
What is the Miami Hurricanes’ all-time record when they are part of College GameDay?
The Hurricanes are 16-9 entering Saturday when College GameDay is on site for one of their games. This includes a 7-1 record at home, with the lone loss of those eight being the 2006 matchup against FSU.
Miami’s .640 winning percentage is the fifth best among schools with at least 20 GameDay appearances, behind USC (18-6, .750 win percentage), Ohio State (47-20, .701 win percentage), Oklahoma (28-14, .667 win percentage) and Alabama (39-21, .650 win percentage).
Who is the Miami Hurricanes’ most common opponent on College GameDay?
The Hurricanes have faced FSU eight times on College GameDay, the most of any opponent. Saturday will be Miami’s fourth game against Florida on GameDay. UM has also faced Virginia Tech three times and Clemson twice. Their other nine opponents have been one-offs: California (2024 season), Louisville (2020 season), Notre Dame (2017 season), NC State (2004 season), Ohio State (2003 Fiesta Bowl for the BCS National Championship Game), Tennessee (2002 season), Nebraska (2002 Rose Bowl for the BCS National Championship Game), Syracuse (2001 season) and UCLA (1998 season).
Most appearances in a single year
The most times the Hurricanes have been on GameDay in a single season is three times, first done in the 2001 season when they won their most recent national championship and then matched in the 2002 season and again in the 2020 season.
Could the Miami Hurricanes potentially be part of College GameDay again this year?
Yes. Miami’s road game at Florida State on Oct. 4, which has the potential to be a top-10 matchup for the first time since 2013, should get serious considerations from ESPN to be GameDay that week.
Beyond that, any other GameDay possibilities would likely only come in the ACC Championship Game or during the College Football Playoff should Miami qualify.
Who have been the Miami Hurricanes’ guest pickers?
Guest pickers became a regular fixture on College GameDay in 2008, with a celebrity with ties to the host team joining the panel to make their picks for the games of the week at the end of the show.
There have been four guest pickers with UM ties over the years. The quartet: 14-time MLB All-Star and 2009 World Series champion Alex Rodriguez (twice, Nov. 11, 2017 for Miami-Notre Dame and Oct. 10, 2020 for Miami at Clemson), Hurricanes star wide receiver and Pro Football Hall of Famer Michael Irvin (Aug. 24, 2019, for Miami-Florida in Orlando), rapper and former 2 Live Crew head man Luther “Uncle Luke” Campbell (Dec. 2, 2017 for ACC Championship Game between Miami and Clemson) and Jon “Stugotz” Weiner (Sept. 26, 2020 for Miami-FSU).
