Live Updates: No. 10 Miami Hurricanes beat No. 6 Notre Dame Fighting Irish
The Miami Hurricanes entered Hard Rock Stadium on a mission.
They had a statement to make.
And while it wasn’t pretty late, what a statement they made.
The 10th-ranked Hurricanes opened Year 4 of the Mario Cristobal era with a thrilling 27-24 win over the sixth-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Sunday in front of an announced crowd of 66,793 — most clad in orange — to give themselves early momentum for a season with College Football Playoff aspirations.
Carter Davis hit a 47-yard field goal with 1:04 left to play to give Miami (1-0) the lead for good after the Hurricanes blew a 14-point second-half lead that saw Notre Dame (0-1) tie the game with 3:21 left on the clock.
The defense, which was steady for three quarters before Notre Dame started rallying in the fourth, held the Fighting Irish on their last attempt to complete their comeback and sealed Miami’s win. Akheem Mesidor and Rueben Bain Jr. combined on a sack of quarterback CJ Carr on the final play of the game.
And it’s a tie game
Notre Dame capitalized on Miami’s recent run of offensive futility.
After a fourth consecutive three-and-out by Miami’s offense, CJ Carr scored on a 7-yard QB keeper to tie the game at 24-24 with 3:21 left to play. A 65-yard catch and run from Eli Raridon put Notre Dame in good field position.
It’s a one-score game again
Notre Dame put together a 10-play drive, but Miami’s defense held the Fighting Irish to just a field goal.
Miami leads 24-17 with 5:32 left to play.
Hurricanes add a field goal
The offense went three and out again, but Carter Davis hit a 38-yard field goal to give Miami a two-score lead.
It’s 24-14 Miami with 9:42 left to play.
Rueben Bain interception
And the Hurricanes’ defense steps up.
Rueben Bain Jr. with an interception of CJ Carr two plays later.
Massive.
Miami offense sputtering
The Hurricanes went three-and-out on consecutive drives after going up 21-7.
They’re giving Notre Dame a chance to get back in it
Notre Dame back within a touchdown
The Fighting Irish cut their deficit to 21-14 five seconds into the fourth quarter on a 1-yard touchdown pass from CJ Carr to Fort Lauderdale Pine Crest alumnus Jordan Faison.
Methodical drive to start second half leads to touchdown
Touchdown Hurricanes. CharMar “Marty” Brown with a 5-yard TD run to cap a 12-play, 75-yard drive that took up 7:37.
Methodical, time-consuming drive for the Hurricanes to start the second half.
21-7 Miami over Notre Dame with 7:23 left in the third quarter.
Halftime thoughts
At halftime, the Hurricanes are doing just about everything they needed to do to compete with Notre Dame.
Carson Beck is playing errorless football.
They’re winning at the line of scrimmage more often than not.
They’re limiting mistakes, with just one penalty and no turnovers.
Now, it’s a matter of keeping that up through the second half.
CJ Daniels highlight reel touchdown catch
Wide receiver CJ Daniels, a transfer from LSU, came up with what might be a catch of the year contender by the end of the season.
He leapt and grabbed a pass one-handed, his right arm stretched out, with Leonard Moore and Adon Shuler in coverage for a 20-yard touchdown catch.
Miami is up 14-7 on Notre Dame with 12 seconds left in the first half.
The Hurricanes get the ball back to start the second half.
Tie game
A 30-yard run from Jadarian Price gets Notre Dame to the Miami 3 yard line. UM forced the Fighting Irish into a third and goal from the 7 and got pressure on CJ Carr but couldn’t finish the play.
Carr finds to Micah Gilbert for a 7-yard touchdown.
The game is tied, 7-7, with 5:21 left in the second quarter.
Beck to Toney for first UM touchdown
Carson Beck to Malachi Toney. 28-yard touchdown. 7-0 Miami over Notre Dame, 14:03 left in the second quarter. Toney with 3 catches for 52 yards and the TD on that drive. The freshman and former standout at Plantation American Heritage is coming up big in his first collegiate game.
No score after first quarter
It’s 0-0 after 15 minutes but Miami is driving. The Hurricanes are on the Notre Dame 28 yard line after consecutive completions from Carson Beck to freshman Malachi Toney.
Beck so far is 6 for 10 for 59 yards.
Big play from David Blay
Hello, David Blay Jr. The Louisiana Tech transfer blows up a designed quarterback run on third down to force Notre Dame to punt again. I’ve been impressed early by the UM defensive line.
Bad snap leads to botched field goal attempt
Hurricanes line up for a 28-yard field goal attempt. Bad snap foiled any chance for Carter Davis to do anything. Turnover on downs. Wasted opportunity, especially after UM had great field position following the turnover and an early gamble paid off after they went for it on 4th and 1 from the Notre Dame 15 and converted on a Mark Fletcher Jr. 3-yard rush up the middle.
Hurricanes force a turnover
Justin Scott forces a fumble, Jakobe Thomas recovers on Notre Dame’s first play of their second drive. Canes set up with good field position, starting at the ND 24.
Miami’s first drive comes up empty
Carson Beck went 3 for 4 for 27 yards on his first drive for the Hurricanes, completing passes to Keelan Marion (15 yards), CJ Daniels (5 yards) and Josh Moore (8 yards) while missing Joshisha Trader on a deep ball.
Miami punted after the drive stalled at its 42 yard line.
Also of note: Sophomore Jordan Lyle started at running back over Mark Fletcher.
Hurricanes get an early stop
Massive pressure from the UM defensive line on Notre Dame’s second third down of the game leads to a key early stop. Marquise Lightfoot was credited with the QB hurry on Notre Dame’s redshirt freshman quarterback CJ Carr. The Irish are punting from the Miami 42. Notre Dame passed on 6 of 7 plays on that drive. The Fighting Irish’s only run was from Jeremiyah Love that went for 1 yard.
Canes start on defense
The Hurricanes won the coin toss and defer to the second half.
UM will start on defense.
Kickoff coming momentarily.
