Things To Do

Miami still isn’t completely reopened. Here’s what you can and can’t do this weekend

Restaurants don’t open for indoor dining until Aug. 31, but you can still get takeout or eat outside this weekend at spots like Wynwood’s La Tiendita Taqueria.

Public schools in Miami-Dade start next week, and you know what that means: You’d better have some fun this weekend before the homework onslaught begins.

Beaches are open, but restaurants aren’t open for indoor dining until Monday, Aug. 31. So if you want to go out to eat or drink, you’re going to have to do it outside — which you can do at many restaurants around town, like La Tiendita Taqueria in Wynwood (where you can also get a margarita at a ventanita).

If you’re in the mood for a little bit of a party, you could hit Café La Trova’s outdoor pop-up La Terraza de La Trova from 6-10 p.m. on Saturday. The restaurant and bar was just named a finalist in two categories in the Tales of the Cocktail Foundation’s 2020 Spirited Awards; this could be time to try one of its famous cocktails.

Here are some of the other things you can do in and around Miami on the weekend of Aug. 28-30.

Just remember, Miami-Dade County’s daily curfew from 10 p.m.-6 a.m. continues for now and masks are still mandatory in Miami-Dade County with a few exceptions,

SPECIAL EVENTS

Headbangers can sip lychee wine and watch a Metallica concert film at 8 p.m. Saturday at a pop-up drive-in theater at Schnebly Redland’s Winery in Homestead.

On Saturday Aug. 29 Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden launches its Eat, Drink, Garden al fresco dining series with a sustainable Caribbean meal from Chef Alan Susser. Expect panfried lionfish with bitters-spiced chickpeas; grilled creole sirloin steak with roasted green figs and vegetables; and Caribbean Rum Cake. Wine, beer and other beverages included. The series will continue with new chefs on the last Friday of the month, with seatings at 5:30 and 8 p.m.

RESTAURANTS

Restaurants are set to reopen for limited-capacity indoor dining on Aug. 31, so for one more weekend, you’re going to have to stick to outdoor dining, takeout or delivery. Some restaurants have closed temporarily during the COVID-19 outbreak, while others have closed for good. Still others have dramatically changed their menus to better serve takeout customers.

BARS

Bars are closed unless they have a food license. If they do have a license, they can only serve drinks outdoors and must abide by the Miami-Dade County curfew.

NIGHTCLUBS

Nightclubs are still closed under county rules.

BEACHES

County beaches are open.

MOVIE THEATERS

Movie theaters are still closed in Miami-Dade County, but two AMC cinemas are open in Broward, one in Fort Lauderdale and the other in Pembroke Pines. Both will operate with new COVID-19 restrictions. A few pop up drive-in movie theaters remain open, including a drive-in at the Miami Youth Fairgrounds, which is showing “Dirty Dancing” Friday and Saturday (insert “you’ll have the time of your life” joke here). The Hard Rock Stadium Fountain Open Air Plaza theater is also open this weekend, with “Field of Dreams,” “Friday Night Lights,” “Madagascar” and “Jaws.” At Carpool Cinema Wynwood, relieve your childhood with “The Goonies.”

COUNTY AND CITY PARKS

All Miami-Dade parks are open, and so are marinas and golf courses.

BISCAYNE NATIONAL PARK

The park is open and has started up a new Group Snorkel Experience that makes it easier to maintain social distancing while snorkeling the reef, mangroves or even a shipwreck. Trips are four hours and capped at six people; book a trip here.
