With Achane injured, the Dolphins sign RB Carlos Washington Jr. & OL Marques Cox
The Miami Dolphins have added some help at running back and in the trenches.
Former Atlanta Falcons running back Carlos Washington Jr. and tackle Marques Cox have signed with the Dolphins. Miami also waived tight end Jalin Conyers and offensive lineman Braeden Daniels.
This comes just days after running back De’Von Achane missed at least one session of organized training activities (OTAs) with an unknown injury.
“He’s so dynamic,” Dolphins passing game coordinator Kevin Patullo said the week before OTAs started. “That brings so much to the offense and really stresses the defense because he’s not just playing running back. It’s going to be really exciting to get him out there once he’s healthy and ready to roll.”
An undrafted prospect out of Southeastern Louisiana and New Hampshire, Washington has spent his entire career with the Falcons after he signed with its practice squad in 2023. He has been either released or waived from the Falcons several times, the most recent occasion coming May 12.
Washington has yet to record an NFL carry. He has, however, appeared in two total games in 2024 and 2025 via special teams.
Cox came into the league as an undrafted free agent with the Denver Broncos in 2025. He also had brief stint with the Arizona Cardinals last season as well. Cox, however, hasn’t recorded any snaps in an NFL game.
Before the NFL, Cox attended Northern Illinois before eventually transferring to Kentucky for his final two seasons.
An undrafted free agent that joined the Dolphins in 2025, Conyers spent the entire season on injured reserve (IR) after hurting his foot. He was expected to compete for playing time in a pretty open tight end room that includes Greg Dulcich, Seydou Traore, Will Kacmarek, Cole Turner and Ben Simms.
Conyers attended Arizona State before transferring to Texas Tech for his final season in 2024. That same year, he received All-Big 12 honors after finishing the year with 30 catches for 320 yards and five touchdowns.
The Washington Commanders drafted Daniels in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Unfortunately, he suffered a torn rotator cuff and spent the entire season on IR.
Daniels has since spent time on the practice squads for the Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans, Los Angeles Chargers and Philadelphia Eagles before arriving in Miami in 2025. He played his entire collegiate career in Utah, making a Pac-12 All-Conference first-team in 2022.
With Achane out for an unknown amount of time, Washington will have a chance to compete with Jaylen Wright, Ollie Gordon II, Donovan Edwards, DJ Herman and Anthony Hankerson for a roster spot. Cox, meanwhile, will compete with Josh Priebe, Charlie Heck, Jamaree Salyer, Kion Smith, Carter Warren and Kevin Cline to backup either Patrick Paul and Austin Jackson.
Washington, however, might not be the last running back signing. With summer approaching, the position consistently gives way to injury. Expect more to be signed throughout the summer.
Regardless of what’s currently ailing Achane, he should be ready when the season begins. The one-time Pro Bowler officially signed his four-year, $68 million extension on Wednesday, a deal that will keep him with the Dolphins through 2030.
“Just put pen to paper,” Achane said in a video released by the team on Wednesday. “Excited to be here a few more years. Let’s get it.”
