As Formula One booms in popularity across the United States, South Florida will host a race for the first time this weekend. The inaugural Miami Grand Prix is set for Sunday at the Miami International Velodrome — a temporarily constructed venue around Hard Rock Stadium -- in Miami Gardens.

No, the event isn’t actually in Miami — as locals know and some out-of-town guests are sure to be confused by — but it’s all semantics: One of the biggest sports in the world is in Miami-Dade County for the first time at a moment when the sport has never been more popular.

Festivities kick off Wednesday, and cars will hit the track Friday for a few days of practice ahead of the actual Grand Prix.
