Titletown South Florida: New chapters begin at two of the state’s top football programs

Football is almost back.

Well, spring football anyway.

But if you’re starving for any kind of high school football, the sounds of pads and helmets cracking at practices all across South Florida will soon be underway.

Titletown South Florida, presented by Orange Bowl, returns to look at the start of the spring season next Monday.

Miami Herald Deputy Sports Editor Andre Fernandez and Sportswriter David Wilson discuss the top storylines and Fernandez interviews the new coaches at Miami Northwestern and Homestead High Schools.

Homestead is coming off a historic season during which it advanced to the state finals for the first time ever. Broncos assistant coach Ron Thornton was promoted to head coach after Phillip Simpson’s departure to the Unviersity of Nebraska and has not only kept the majority of the key players that led them to state, they have added talent in key areas as they look to upend national powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas in Class 3M.

At Northwestern, new coach and alum Michaelee Harris returns to his alma mater hoping to lead the Bulls back to the top in a brutal Class 2M field.

Harris, a former star wide receiver for the Bulls in the late 2000s, was on staff before coaching a year at Miami Carol City, and believes his team is on the cusp of breaking through for what would be its eighth state championship all-time and first since 2019.

We also salute this week’s Player of the Week nominees from both Dade and Broward Counties ranging from baseball and softball to tennis and lacrosse as the spring sports season moves into its final month.
