Poll: Which Dade high school athlete should be the Miami Herald’s Player of the Week? (April 23)

Miami-Dade County’s top athletes continue to stand out as we move closer to the final month of the 2022-23 high school sports spring season.

This week, we continue a weekly feature where we ask you to vote for the best performer of the week in Miami-Dade County high school sports.

Below is a look at the five candidates from last week’s action. Take our poll below to cast your vote. The poll will be open until Thursday, April 27, around 10 p.m.

You may vote as often as you like until then.

Here are the candidates from last week’s events:

Carlos Jacome, Columbus, baseball: Jacome went a combined 8 for 11 with two home runs, a double, a triple and a combined seven RBI to lead the Explorers to wins over Miami Springs, Varela and West Broward. The first two wins secured Columbus the GMAC title and the latter was pivotal for seeding in the upcoming playoffs.

Aaron Hernandez, Westminster Christian, baseball: Hernandez struck out 10 over 5 ⅓ innings to lead the Warriors to a 7-1 win over defending state champion Doral Academy.

Brianna Fields, Coral Reef, softball: Fields went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBI and made a great defensive play in left field to prevent a run and finish off Palmetto for a 5-2 win and the GMAC championship. Fields also hit 1 for 2 with two runs scored in the semifinals against Hialeah Gardens.

Arianna Garcia, Carrollton, girls’ track and field: Garcia won the 100 and 400 meter hurdles as well as the triple jump at the District 16-2A championships.

Katarina Slazas, Palmetto, badminton: Slazas repeated as GMAC champion in girls’ singles and led the Panthers to their second team title in a row.
