Waynman Steed’s pickoff propels Miami Central Rockets to shutout win

Waynman Steed intercepted a screen pass and ran 41 yards to spark a 24-point second quarter in Central’s 45-0 victory against Jackson (5-4) at Traz Powell Stadium.

The District 16-6A champion Rockets (9-1) followed a scoreless first quarter with a 56-yard touchdown from Jerrod Thomas to Da’Vante Phillips and a Thomas scoring run. Quarterback Malik Atkin led the Rockets in the second half with two touchdown passes and a touchdown run.

Atkin was 5 of 7 with 109 yards passing and 50 rushing yards. Cedric Miller had 11 carries for 158 yards, and Da’Vante Phillips had four catches for 102 yards.

“A lot of our guys had to play through injury, so we just had to go out and fight and have a good game,” Phillips said. “That really set the tone. We came out really flat.”

The Generals clinched a runner-up playoff berth with Cardinal Gibbons’ loss.
