Results are in. Coral Park bowling standout voted Dade High School Athlete of the Week

Coral Park bowling standout Luis Fernandez is the Miami-Dade High School Athlete of the Week, as voted on by readers in our weekly poll.

Fernandez, who was a second-team All-County member last season, rolled a high set 653 at the Youth Fair bowling tournament to earn top honors among the boys’ competitors.

Next up is the chance to qualify for state. District tournaments take place this week. The top two teams and the top two individuals not on qualifying teams in each district advance to the state tournament, which takes place Nov. 1-3 at Orlando’s Boardwalk Bowl Entertainment Center.

More than 113,000 votes were cast in this poll, with Fernandez receiving 70 percent of the votes. Cutler Bay swimming’s Olivia Dinehart, Gulliver Prep football’s Lamont Green Jr., Southridge football’s Damari Charlton and Palmetto girls’ volleyball’s Hailey Zambrana rounded out this week’s participants.

The Miami Herald Athlete of the Week polls — now one each for Miami-Dade and Broward counties — open Sunday every week and close around 10 p.m. Thursday.
