Mater Academy has success in opening of district play

The Mater Academy defense could not get a shutout, but it did not allow the Trojans a first down Friday night at Monsignor Edward Pace High School’s Jones Field. It was each team’s first District 16-7A game.

In the first quarter, Simino Walden scored the touchdown for HML (0-4, 0-1) on a short slant pass from Tacarrius Brown. It was the first touchdown of the season for the Trojans.

The Lions (2-1, 1-0) responded with two touchdowns in the second quarter. Zack Moss scored on a 4-yard run and Steven Rodriguez scored on a 24-yard pass from Temothas Herrington.

In addition to preventing HML from gaining a first down, Mater was penalized only three times for 11 yards. Moss finished with 57 rushing yards. Kevin Sanchez led Mater with 72 rushing yards.
