Maurice Alexander leads Booker T. Washington to 55-7 rout of Jackson

Like Booker T. Washington has done for seemingly every one of its state-record 31 consecutive wins, it played fast and left its opponent in the dust.

With senior quarterback and FIU commit Maurice Alexander leading the vertical passing game, the Tornadoes (5-0) swept right past Jackson 55-7 on Friday night at Traz Powell Stadium.

Alexander threw for 329 yards (276 of them in the first half) and four touchdowns on 14-of-20 passing and added two rushing touchdowns.

“They were playing Cover 0, and not too many teams are going to stop us like that,” Alexander said.

Two of his passing scores went to Vaquan Smalls, who finished with three catches for 101 yards. Antonio Callaway caught three more for 109 yards and a touchdown, and Shaquille Green blocked a punt that was returned for a score to go with his 73 receiving yards and touchdown through the air.

Jackson played Booker T. tight for a quarter, but that was it. After a 7-7 first period, the Tornadoes won the second quarter 34-0, scoring four of the five touchdowns over a span of five minutes.

“It was good to see that the kids didn’t lose composure and stayed focused on the task at hand, and didn’t get rattled at all by that tough first quarter,” Booker T. coach Tim Harris Jr. said. “We feel like we’re fast, but we have to get a lot faster to consider ourselves the fastest team in the nation.”

The Generals (1-1) moved the ball well on Booker T. with 14 first downs, but they could not stop the Tornadoes. Desmond Phillips threw for 138 yards, and Nakia Robinson scored the lone Generals touchdown.

▪ North Miami Beach 34, Krop 21: Behind three rushing touchdowns from Jordan Atkins and two more from quarterback Cedric Wiggins, North Miami Beach earned its first district win in a game that started Thursday night and was completed Friday afternoon at Traz Powell Stadium after delays because of inclement weather.

Wiggins scored both of his touchdowns in the first quarter of the contest between neighborhood rivals known as the High Voltage Bowl on Thursday and finished 104 yards rushing and 55 passing.

Atkins took it from there for the Chargers (1-2, 1-0 District 13-8A) when action resumed in the second quarter Friday, scoring all three of his touchdowns from close range and totaling 46 yards on 16 carries.

Edward Mendez went 9 for 19 for 244 yards and a pair of touchdowns that went for 83 and 73 yards for Krop (1-3, 0-1).
