Results are in. Monarch QB voted Broward High School Athlete of the Week
Monarch quarterback A.J. Hairston is the Miami Herald’s Broward High School Athlete of the Week, as voted on by readers in our weekly poll.
Hairston, a junior, completed 21 of 29 passes for 326 yards and four touchdowns in a 64-42 win for the Monarchs over Piper last week. Monarch followed that win by beating Stoneman Douglas 20-14 on Thursday to improve to 4-1 on the season and 1-0 in District 13-4M play.
On the season, Hairston has completed 64 percent of his passes for 896 yards and seven touchdowns against one interception while also rushing for 106 yards and three more touchdowns on 12 carries.
More than 11,000 votes were cast in this week’s poll, with Hairston receiving 51 percent of the vote. Archbishop McCarthy boys’ golfer Brett Moore, American Heritage girls’ cross-country runner Ashley Fitzgerald, Chaminade-Madonna running back Davion Gause and South Florida HEAT boys’ cross-country runner Hunter Morgan were the other contenders for this week.
The Miami Herald Athlete of the Week polls — now one each for Miami-Dade and Broward counties — open Sunday every week and close around 10 p.m. Thursday.
