Belen Jesuit cross-country runner Joshua Ruiz was named the Miami Herald High School Player of the week, as voted on by readers in our weekly poll — the first weekly poll of the 2022-2023 athletic season.

Ruiz was the 5K individual champion at the Park Vista Invitational in a time of 16:00 to open the Wolverines’ season.

The junior was one of the MiamI Herald’s Co-Cross Country Runners of the Year for Miami-Dade County last season after finishing second individually in the Class 3A State Championship with a time of 15:37.4 in Tallahassee to lead the Wolverines to their 13th state championship.

Ruiz received 88 percent of the vote in the poll, which opened on Sunday afternoon and closed Thursday night. Miami Central defensive lineman Rueben Bain, Plantation American Heritage running back Mark Fletcher, SLAM girls’ golfer Dariana Breto and Miami Northwestern receiver Adam Moore rounded out this week’s participants.
