Poll: Which high school athlete should be the Miami Herald’s Player of the Week? (Aug. 28)

The 2022-23 high school sports season kicked off with several tremendous performances by South Florida athletes already and big statements being made by some of the top teams in the nation.

This week, we continue a weekly feature we started last season where we ask you to vote for the best performer of the week in South Florida high school sports.

Below is a look at the five candidates from last week’s action. Take our poll below to cast your vote. The poll will be open until Thursday, Sept. 1, around 10 p.m. You may vote as often as you like until then.

Here are the candidates from last week’s events:

Mark Fletcher, American Heritage, football: Fletcher, an Ohio State commit, ran for 222 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries to lead the Patriots to a 56-27 rout of Los Alamitos (Cal.) in the Broward Showcase.

Rueben Bain, Miami Central, football: Bain had three sacks and was pivotal in the Rockets’ 20-14 upset win over national top 5-ranked Bradenton IMG Academy.

Joshua Ruiz, Belen, boys’ cross-country: Ruiz, a junior, was the 5K individual champion in a time of 16:00 at the Park Vista Invitational to open the Wolverines’ season.

Dariana Breto, SLAM, girls’ golf: Breto shot a 68 and won a scorecard playoff to secure the championship of the Lady Maverick Invitational.
