The results are in. Doral baseball standout voted Miami Herald player of the week
Doral Academy baseball standout Daniel Restrepo is the Miami Herald’s Player of the Week, as voted on by readers in our weekly poll — the final weekly poll of the 2021-2022 athletic season.
Restrepo, a junior, totaled a combined seven RBI in two games and delivered the decisive runs in each game at state to help the Firebirds win their first state baseball title. Restrepo’s walk-off RBI single lifted Doral to a 5-4 win in extra innings in the state semifinals against Tampa Sickles. He then hit a three-run home run to give the Firebirds enough of a cushion to beat Pensacola Pace 5-4 in the final.
“It’s unbelievable,” Restrepo said. “We have a young team so everybody kept telling us next year, next year, but we made it happen this year. We took that personal and we believed in us.”
Restrepo finished the season hitting .375 with a team-high 34 RBI, five home runs and 12 doubles to go along with 21 runs scored.
More than 10,000 votes were cast in this week’s poll, with Restrepo receiving 64 percent of the vote. Western softball’s Ali Soto, Coral Springs Charter softball’s Stephanie Basso, Somerset Silver Palm softball’s Edan Playa and Douglas baseball’s Jake Clemente were the other contenders for this week.
