Poll: Which high school athlete should be the Miami Herald’s Player of the Week? (May 1)

More state champions were crowned in tennis and the postseason is in full swing starting this week in baseball and softball. And so, more notable performances by South Florida’s best athletes stood out this past week.

This week, we continue a weekly feature where we ask you to vote for the best performer of the week in South Florida high school sports.

Below is a look at the five candidates from last week’s action. Take our poll below to cast your vote. The poll will be open until Thursday, May 5, around 10 p.m. You may vote as often as you like until then.

Here are the candidates from last week’s events:

Nick Rubino, Ransom Everglades, baseball: Rubino struck out 10 in six innings to lead the Raiders to a 5-0 win over Palmer Trinity and also homered in an 8-7 win over Marathon. Rubino leads Miami-Dade County with 11 home runs.

Valeria Ray, Doral, girls’ tennis: Ray won overall singles title in Class 4A and went a 5-1 overall in team competition at state — 3-0 in singles, 2-1 in doubles — to lead the Firebirds to their fourth consecutive state team title.

Colton Bueter, South Broward, boys’ volleyball: Bueter had 18 kills, 18 digs and six aces to lead the Bulldogs over Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna to secure the District 22 championship.

Corey Craig, Monarch, boys’ tennis: Craig shut out Miami Palmetto’s Sebastian Munoz, 6-0, 6-0 to win the overall Class 4A boys’ singles state championship. Craig, a senior who has signed to play for Boston University, went 12-0 this season and did not drop a set.

Alex Perea, St. Brendan, softball: Perea went 6 for 11 at the plate to lead the Sabres to the runner-up finish at the Bill Longshore Tournament in Naples. St. Brendan scored wins against Naples Palmetto Ridge, Naples and West Broward before losing in the final to Tampa Sickles.
