The results are in. Braddock softball standout voted Miami Herald player of the week
Braddock softball’s Juliette Avila is the Miami Herald’s Player of the Week, as voted on by readers in our weekly poll.
Avila, who was a Miami Herald third-team All-Dade softball member last season as a utility player, has been a dominant force at the plate early in her senior season in what has been a feast-for-famine start for the Bulldogs.
Braddock is 3-3 to start the season, scoring at least 18 runs in each of its three wins against Coral Park (25-0), Southridge (28-24) and Ferguson (18-3) but being on the other end of blowouts in losses to South Dade (16-2), Coral Reef (15-0) and Coral Gables (15-5).
Avila, however, has been a constant. She is hitting .778 (14 for 18) with five doubles, two triples, two home runs 16 RBI and 14 runs scored through six games. She has also stolen 17 bases and has multiple hits in four of six games.
Avila, who also averaged more than 14 points per game for Braddock’s basketball team this winter, hit for the cycle in the Bulldogs’ win over Southridge on March 4.
There were more than 52,000 votes cast in this week’s poll, with Avila receiving 54 percent of the vote. St. Brendan boys’ volleyball’s Gabriel Maristanny (40 percent), Cardinal Gibbons girls’ lacrosse’s Emma Neclerio (four percent), North Miami girls’ track and field’s Zaniya Wilson (one percent) and Western baseball’s Kristian Noriega (one percent) rounded out the other contenders for this week.
The Miami Herald will conduct this poll weekly, with polls opening Monday morning and closing at 10 p.m. Thursday.
