Poll: Which high school athlete should be the Miami Herald’s Player of the Week?
As several of Miami-Dade and Broward county teams vie for state championships in soccer and girls’ basketball this week, we’re unveiling a weekly feature where we will ask you to vote for the best performer of the week in South Florida high school sports.
Take our poll below to cast your vote. The poll will be open until Thursday, Feb. 24, around 10 p.m. You may vote as often as you like until then.
Here are the candidates from last week’s events:
▪ Alejandro Pereyra, Miami Belen Jesuit, boys’ soccer: Pereyra scored a combined five goals this past week in the Wolverines’ wins over Naples Golden Gate and Tampa Jesuit, which propelled them to their second consecutive state final.
▪ J-Roc Lopez, Miami True North boys’ basketball: Lopez, an eighth-grader, finished with 25 points, 10 rebounds, six assists, four steals and three blocks to lead True North to a 75-56 regional quarterfinal win over Sheridan Hills Christian. And this came soon after he scored 40 points against Westwood Christian in the district semifinal.
▪ Tristan Simmons, Miramar, boys’ track and field: Simmons won the championships of both the 110- and 300-meter hurdles at the prestigious Louie Bing Invitational on Saturday — a meet long considered one of the top events of the track and field season.
▪ Lena Girardi, Fort Lauderdale Westminster Academy, girls’ basketball: Girardi followed up her 19-point effort against Palmer Trinity with 12 points as the Lions ended Miami Country Day’s nine-year run of making the state final four with a 47-32 win in the Region 4-3A final. The Lions are chasing their first state title since 1991.
▪ Barbara Garcia, Weston Cypress Bay, girls soccer: Garcia scored twice to lead the Lightning to a 3-0 win over Boca Raton which secured her team its fourth consecutive trip to the state final.
