Pace, St. Brendan, West Broward win cheer state titles. Plus hoops, soccer, tennis, water polo

Monsignor Pace, St. Brendan and West Broward won state titles in competitive cheer.

The FHSAA Competitive Cheer State Championships were in the Exactech Arena at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center on the University of Florida campus in Gainesville.

Pace was first in Class 1A Extra Large Non-Tumbling. St. Brendan placed first in Class 1A Extra Large Varsity, and West Broward was first in Class 2A Medium Non Tumbling.

For Pace cheer, this is the program’s first state title.

Girls’ basketball

The Lourdes girls’ basketball team won the District 16-6A championship with a 57-30 victory over Mater Academy Charter.

District 16-3A

The Palmer Trinity girls’ basketball team won the District 16-3A championship by defeating Somerset-Silver Palms 74-64.

The Falcons avenged their overtime loss to Silver Palms in the regular season.

Sophomore Jade Leon was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter. She led all scorers with 21 points. Amanda Kaplan made five 3-pointers, including three in the fourth quarter.

Freshman Angelina Deleon scored 13 points, and Columbia University commit Emily Montes controlled the tempo of the game, finishing with 14 points, 12 rebounds, 5 assist, 4 steals, and 2 blocks.

Both teams qualify for regionals.

The Ransom Everglades girls’ basketball team defeated Florida Christian 65-22 to win the District 15-3A championship.

Kathryn Serra, a junior, had 26 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Raiders (16-6). Both teams qualify for regionals.

A young True North Classical Academy boys’ basketball team won the District 16-2A championship by defeating Westwood Christian 71-65 in the semifinal.

In the other semifinal, Dade Christian beat Miami Christian, but Dade Christian was disqualified for using ineligible players, according to True North; so True North was awarded the title.

Soccer

GIRLS: 7A Region QF: Palmetto 2, Western 1 (PKs): Palmetto out scored the Wildcats 4-2 in the shootout with Jasyn Altchek, Lola Cattaneo, Emma Weinberg and Mya Lara converting. Keeper Sami Anes, who made 12 saves, stopped two big shots during the PKs.

Catherine Green scored off an assist from Weinberg in regulation for the Panthers (16-2-1). Tied at one after regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods, penalty kicks determined the winner. Palmetto plays in a region semifinal against Dr. Krop (12-3) on Friday.

GIRLS: 7A Region QF: Dr. Krop 5, Coral Reef 1: Mai Lisa Atis had two goals, and Valerie Bautista, Dayanara Monetti and Jackie Lew also scored. Alyssa Marquez played well on defense as did keeper Gia Wasserstein.

GIRLS: 6A Region QF: Lourdes 6, Seminole Ridge 1: Sienna Aviles had two goals and two assists, and Coco Aguilar scored twice. Tessa Abreu totaled one goal and one assist, and Sophie Gonzalez also scored. Olivia Borroto added an assist. Keeper Stephanie Wyszkowski allowed no goals in the second half. The Bobcats (13-1-4) onto the region semifinals on Friday.

GIRLS: 6A Region QF: Doral Academy 6, Everglades 0: Antonella Monsalve and Emma Salas had two goals apiece, and Camila Lezcano and Pietra Tordin also scored. Ayla Ramos and Ashley Rodriguez combined on the shutout. The Firebirds (13-3-2) play St. Thomas Aquinas in a region semifinal Friday.

GIRLS: 6A Region QF: St. Thomas Aquinas 4, Fort Lauderdale 0: Player of the Game Isabella Kleva scored twice, and Gabrielle Stewart and Mickey Masterson also scored for the region semifinal bound Raiders (19-2-1).

GIRLS: 5A Region QF: Pembroke Pines Charter 1, Riviera Beach-Suncoast 0: Sabrina Araujo scored the winner, and keeper Madison Casanova recorded her 16th shutout with solid defensive support from Carina Pau, Katlyn Fernandez, Lexi Moscoso, and Natali Brito. The Jaguars (14-0-4) play in a region semifinal on Friday.

GIRLS: 4A Region QF: Gulliver Prep 2, Jensen Beach 1: In the first half, Ariana Hernando beat her defender on a run on the side and crossed to Luciana Hornstein, who finished one-time. In the second half, the Raiders (11-10-3) drew a penalty, and senior Christine Lezama scored in the bottom corner for a 2-0 lead. Gulliver advances to a region semifinal on Friday.

GIRLS: 3A Region QF: LaSalle 1, Ransom Everglades 0: Rebecca Baldelomar scored the winner, and keeper Ashley Fonseca made 10 saves for her sixth shutout of the season. Ransom finished the season 12-7-1. The Royal Lions (12-5-3) compete in a region semifinal Friday against North Broward Prep (14-4-2).

GIRLS: 3A Region QF: Palmer Trinity 4, Pine Crest 0: Scarlett Baur had three goals, and Lila Algarin added one goal and one assist. Cailyn Sullivan recorded three assists and Lila Algarin one. The Falcons (10-2-1) face Westminster Christian (8-4-2) in a region semifinal Friday.

GIRLS: 2A Region QF: True North Classical Academy 4, Boca Raton Christian 0: Jennifer Pena scored twice, and Aliyana Henry had one goal and one assist. Cassidy Fabian also scored, and keeper Gabriela Scott recorded her second consecutive shutout. The Titans (10-3) challenge Westminster Academy (8-8-2) in a region semifinal Friday.

Water polo
