Northwestern girls, STA boys open track and field season on high note at Louie Bing meet

As it attempts to keep one of the longest active state championships in state history regardless of sport alive, the Northwestern girls’ track and field team opened the season strong by winning the team championship of the prestigious Louie Bing Invitational this past weekend at Traz Powell Stadium.

The Bulls scored 104 points to beat rival Southridge, the runner-up with 70.5 points.

Northwestern flexed its muscle in the field events as Emani Perry secured the championship in the triple jump on the first day of the meet with a jump of 37 feet, 1.25 inches while Janist Daniel won the javelin title with a throw of 117-7.

Although the Bulls did not capture an individual title in the running events, they will once again field a deep squad on that side as well, as they chase their state-best 13th consecutive state title and 18th overall.

Miramar’s Tristan Simmons was the only double winner from South Florida as he secured the championships of both the 110-meter hurdles (14.57) and 300-meter hurdles (37.99).

Aquinas secured the boys’ crown with 109 points and looks to end a seven-year championship drought for a program that’s won six state titles.

Columbus and Northwestern once again will vie for supremacy in Miami-Dade on the boys side as the Explorers and Bulls finished third and fourth respectively and separated by three points.

Columbus won the championships of the 800 and 1000 meter sprint relays while Northwestern won the 400 relay. Jamari Sharpe won the 100 meters for Northwestern while Shaddai Carter secured the triple jump title for Columbus and Gustavo Alfonso won the javelin.
