Colin Ilgner finally got Cypress Bay over the state-title hump again. Rafael Ferreiro had Cardinal Gibbons on its way to possibly winning its first before running into one of the stories of the boys’ soccer season.

For that, the two are the Miami Herald’s Broward Boys’ Soccer Coaches of the Year.

Ilgner led Cypress Bay to a 22-1 record, including 19 consecutive wins to close the season, and its sixth state title in the sport but first since they won those first five titles in a seven-year stretch from 2011-2017. The Lightning outscored opponents 77-11 on the season and had shutouts in 13 of their final 15 games.

Cypress Bay’s senior-laden roster featured three players score double-digit goals: Giancarlo Dostillo (19 goals, 22 assists), Jace Meuser (11 goals, six assists) and Elan Romo (10 goals, seven assists). It was more than enough firepower to complement goalkeeper Andres Dimiele, who allowed just three goals all season.

Meanwhile at Cardinal Gibbons, Ferriero led the Chiefs to a 16-3-2 record, with their season ending in the regional finals against eventual state champion St. Brendan. Like Cypress Bay, Cardinal Gibbons was stingy on defense, allowing just 11 goals on the season — four of which came in the Chiefs’ regular-season loss to Cypress Bay.

Junior midfielder Danny Perret-Gentile led the Chiefs offensively with 10 goals and nine assists, while senior Grant Rodriguez was in net for 10 of Cardinal Gibbons’ 14 shutouts.
