With West Broward’s regular head coach Danielle Culbertson missing some of the cheerleading season while out on maternity leave, the program was in the hands of Dawn Vazquez and Amber San Angelo.
The Bobcats didn’t miss a beat.
West Broward was the only team from Broward County to win a state cheerleading title this season, doing so in the Class 2A medium non-tumbling division.
As such, West Broward’s Vazquez and San Angelo are the Miami Herald’s Broward cheerleading coaches of the year.
Cheerleading success isn’t necessarily a new phenomenon for West Broward. The Bobcats have now won five state titles in the sport (2011-2013, 2020 and 2022), second in Broward County only behind Coral Glades’ six, and has posted top-two finishes every year since 2018.
Their 18-person team, which featured six seniors, scored an 82.10 in the finals at state, barely edging Orange Park Oakleaf’s score of 80.50 for the state title.
