Beck lands in Hurricanes record book after stellar first half vs Bethune-Cookman
It took quarterback Carson Beck just two games to land himself in the Miami Hurricanes record book — but he was actually striving for a little bit more
Beck completed his first 15 passes in Miami’s 45-3 rout of the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats on Saturday, breaking the UM single-game record of 14 set by Vinny Testaverde on Sept. 27, 1986 against Oklahoma.
“It’s super cool to perform at a high level and do things like that,” Beck said.
But there actually was a number Beck was going for: 19.
Why? That goes back to a conversation he had leading into the game with Mike Bobo, his former offensive coordinator at Georgia before he transferred to Miami.
Bobo once completed 19 consecutive passes during his playing days at Georgia. After Beck completed 12 consecutive passes at one point during Miami’s upset win over Notre Dame last week, Bobo texted Beck playfully that Beck won’t break that mark.
He came close before he eventually overshot freshman receiver Malachi Toney on an out rout on his 16th pass.
“It was super cool, man,” Beck said. “And those guys are out there making plays. The whole line was giving me all the time in the world. ... It makes my job a little easier.”
Beck finished the game completing 22 of 24 passes for 267 yards and two touchdowns, both of which went to CJ Daniels. UM went into the break leading 28-3.
“He keeps getting better and better,” Hurricanes coach Mario Cristobal said. “At practice every week, there’s just continued growth, development and and, really, you see a growth in the appetite for more. He just wants to get better. He wants Miami to get better. He wants Miami to win. And he’s all about the team.”
Ten different players caught passes from Beck, with Toney leading the way with six receptions for 80 yards. Daniels hauled in five receptions for 73 yards. Elija Lofton (three catches, 21 yards), Tony Johnson (one catch, 20 yards), Ray Ray Joseph (one catch, 18 yards), Mark Fletcher Jr. (one catch, 12 yards), Keelan Marion (one catch, seven yards), Alex Bauman (two catches, 12 yards), Luka Gilbert (one catch, 20 yards) and CharMar Brown (one catch, 4 yards) were the others.
“I think Coach [Shannon] Dawson does a really good job of just mixing up offensive looks and cycling calls,” Beck said, “and not just cycling calls, but getting us in really good calls against what the defense is doing against us. For me, I just do what the defense tells me. I obviously watched it when I prepared for the week, and I have an idea of what it is going to be like, what is going to be on the field, but you never know until you are actually out there, right? You have to react. You have to make the throw, you have to read the defense. That is the fun of the game. It is reacting to the defense.”
