Cold weather in South Florida sets new records, and more chills are in forecast
So you got through Sunday’s record cold in South Florida. But then came Monday — and more chills in the 30s slapped you in the face as you set out for work or school.
At Miami International Airport, Monday’s low plunged to 38 degrees around 7 a.m., according to the National Weather Service in Miami. We missed the record 35-degree mark set at MIA on Feb. 2, 1942, meteorologist Will Redman said.
Broward County hit a record low of 36 degrees at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, he said. The previous coldest temperature was 38 in 1942 and 1979. Palm Beach International Airport “shattered” the previous record of 37 in 1912 and 1979 with a low of 30 degrees.
“Miami was the only one that didn’t have a record,” Redman said.
Still, how much longer will Miami be colder than Alaska?
According to the weather service, Sunday morning, just before 7, the Miami airport registered a record-setting 35 degrees. That beat a 36-degree record low for Feb. 1 set way back in 1909. Kodiak, Alaska, in the southwestern region of the state notched 39 degrees at the same time.

And the cold isn’t going away soon. Tuesday will start off cold once again, and more of it is coming later in the week.
Here’s what to know about the forecast:
Is South Florida done with the record cold?
Are we through with temperatures in the 30s in South Florida. According to the National Weather Service, the region will be a bit warmer on Tuesday morning, with Miami waking up to 43 degrees on Tuesday morning.
The afternoon high Tuesday is a forecast 66. Wednesday morning, we’ll wake to 57 to 60 degrees and climb to 73 in the afternoon.
Morning lows are going to stick to the upper-50s into Thursday, with afternoon highs around 70.
But another cold front is coming on Thursday, said Will Redman, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Miami.
Morning 40s resume Friday at 47 degrees, with a 42 wind chill at 7 a.m.
On Saturday and Sunday, South Florida is looking at morning upper-40s or 50, with afternoon highs around 72, according to the weather service.
“It doesn’t look as powerful as this previous one. Not as much arctic air,” Redman said on Monday morning. But the coastal 40s and mid-30s by Lake Okeechobee could yield cold weather advisories in that region. “That probably is the extent of it.”
South Florida’s coldest places
Here’s where South Florida was the coldest, according to Redman at Miami’s weather service.
- Miami-Dade: The coldest air temperature was felt in Medley, near Hialeah, at 32 degrees, Redman said. But for the nippiest wind chill, that cold weather Sunday champ was Miami Dade College in West Kendall. Good thing students weren’t in class that morning. The “feels-like” figure was 23 degrees.
- Broward: Miramar High School on Southwest 89th Avenue was the coldest place in Broward with an air temp of 32. Pompano Beach had the coldest wind chill of 22.
Cold records
The Miami and West Palm Beach airports set record lows for a Feb. 1 on Sunday. Fort Lauderdale missed by two degrees.
- At Miami International Airport, it was 35 degrees Sunday, beating the old record of 36 set in 1909.
- Palm Beach was 30 degrees Sunday, beating 36, also in 1909.
- Fort Lauderdale was 35 but it had gotten down to 33 on Feb. 1, 1966. So no record Sunday. But Fort Lauderdale set a record on Monday for a Feb. 2 by dipping to 37, breaking the 38 degree chill on Feb. 2, 1979, according to NBC6 meteorologist Chelsea Ambriz.
- Key West dropped to 49 degrees Monday morning, breaking the low temperature record of 50 degrees set on Feb. 2, 1980.
