Deep flooding buried streets in Broward County on Wednesday night.
Stranded cars floated or went under. Water lapped into homes. The Fort Lauderdale airport shut down, a moat surrounded by walls of water.
Levels of 15 to 22 inches of rain fell in the airport area of Hollywood, Dania Beach and Fort Lauderdale, CBS News Miami meteorologist Lissette Gonzalez said Thursday morning.
The National Weather Service had put the county under an emergency flash flood warning Wednesday night. A flood warning remains in effect Thursday morning in Broward. High water remains, although the rain has stopped for now.
A flood watch is in effect until 8 p.m. Thursday in Broward and Miami-Dade counties.
“With already saturated grounds and flooding due to recent rain, additional rainfall today may lead to localized flooding concerns,” the National Weather Service said.
“It will take awhile for it to recede,” Gonzalez said.
With some campuses soaked and neighborhoods under water, Broward public schools are closed on Thursday.
