‘Playful’ shelter dog makes her own Halloween costume, video shows. She needs a home

A “playful” shelter dog got a Halloween costume — and made it her own, video shows.

“We wanted her to be a ghost but she tore through her eyeholes immediately and made it a... face hole, so we’re not sure what this costume is anymore,” the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Florida wrote Oct. 15 on Facebook.

Video from the shelter shows Blueberry with the torn sheet draped around her face, making her look more like a nun.

“She is about 4 years old, weighs about 50 pounds, and is obviously patient with humans and their silly ideas,” the Lakeland-area shelter wrote. “Come visit today and get yourself a... ghost... nun... before Halloween!”

Blueberry needs a new home after she was rescued as a stray. She landed at a shelter in the Florida Panhandle but was evacuated as Hurricane Debby barreled toward the region, according to Randa Richter, humane programs and public media director for SPCA Florida.

Debby was a Category 1 hurricane when it made its first landfall Aug. 5 near Steinhatchee, along Florida’s Gulf Coast. The deadly storm battered parts of the Southeast with wind damage and flooding.

After Blueberry escaped the path of the storm, she became known for her “charming personality and sweet demeanor.” Because she’s so friendly, the shelter put her in its building’s lobby to greet people, according to Richter and an online adoption profile.

“Blueberry is one of the sweetest, most gentle, loving, kind dogs we’ve probably ever encountered,” Richter told McClatchy News in a phone interview. “She’s like everyone’s best friend.”

The mixed-breed dog also has a love for playing outside and snuggling. Richter believes she would be an ideal match for an older couple or another family seeking a calmer dog.

As of Oct. 17, the shelter’s website still listed Blueberry among the dogs available for adoption in Lakeland, a roughly 35-mile drive east from Tampa. More details about its adoption process can be found at spcaflorida.org.
