Jan. 5, 2019 – As part of a power-sharing agreement, Juan Guaidó becomes president of Venezuela’s opposition-controlled National Assembly
Jan. 13, 2019 – Guaidó is briefly detained as he heads to a regional rally.
Jan. 23, 2019 – Guaidó electrifies the crowds and the international community by announcing that he’s the interim president of Venezuela. Within minutes, Washington recognizes him.
Feb. 23, 2019 – Guaidó orchestrates an attempt to force aid into Venezuela from Colombia and Brazil. The attempt fails amid large clashes, torched trucks and several deaths.
March 21, 2019 – Security forces arrest Guaidó’s chief of staff in predawn raid. It’s just one of dozens of arrests and threats of arrests that Guaidó and his allies will face.
April 30, 2019 – Guaidó calls for a military uprising but the plan fizzles and fails and leads to a new rash of opposition detentions.
June 7, 2019 – Amid the political turmoil, the UN says more than 4 million Venezuelans have fled the country, the hemisphere’s largest migratory crisis.
July 5, 2019 – Maduro’s stepsons join more than 100 current and former Venezuelan officials to be sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury, as Washington continues to turn the screws.
Aug. 6, 2019 – U.S. freezes all Venezuelan assets in U.S. jurisdictions – a dramatic escalation of sanctions.
Sept. 16, 2019 – Talks between Maduro and Guaidó factions sponsored by Norway breakdown.
Oct., 2019 – As protests sweep Latin America, Maduro sees his position strengthen.
Dec. 2019 – Facing corruption allegations, Venezuela’s opposition denounces “Operation Scorpion,” a plan to sideline Guaidó.
Jan. 5 2020 – Maduro tries to seize control of congress by rigging the vote against Guaidó.
Jan. 19, 2020 – Guaidó defies a travel ban and visits Colombia, where he meets with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
Jan. 23, 2020 – Guaidó marks one year since he declared himself Venezuela’s interim president.
