Two bodies found on beach in Fort Lauderdale, may be linked to police chase, cops say

UPDATE: The identity of the arrested man has been made public.

Two bodies were found on a Fort Lauderdale beach just before dawn Tuesday, police said. Shortly after, a police chase ensued nearby ending with two wrecked cars and a golf cart. Police are investigating to see if they are related.

“The circumstances are suspicious,” Fort Lauderdale police said of the 6:13 a.m. discovery in the 3000 block of North Ocean Boulevard, just south of Oakland Park Boulevard. Police have not yet released any more information on the double homicide.

Within “close proximity and timeframe” to the homicides, a man driving a Jeep rammed a car and golf cart at 2613 Center Ave. The man drove away in his vehicle, but came back when police were speaking to the victims. This started a police chase that ended with a Florida Highway Patrol car hitting the Jeep on Interstate 95 north at Hillsboro Boulevard.

Daniel Dovi was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated battery, two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of criminal mischief, a count of battery and fleeing.

He did not give a confession to the double homicide but is considered to be a person of interest, police said. During their investigation, police found multiple edged weapons and recently washed clothes.

Detectives believe this contributes to the suspicion that Dovi may be involved in the double homicide that happened in a secluded area.

Police say while Mr. Dovi is a person of interest, he may not be the suspect in the double homicide. Police are asking for businesses and residents to review their surveillance cameras and contact them if anything suspicious is seen.

“The death of the two victims is tragic but we are hopeful that someone can shed light in helping investigators confirm or deny Mr. Dovi’s involvement in the double homicide,” police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Wood at 954-828-5344.
