Miami-Dade corrections officer dies in off-duty motorcycle crash in Sunrise
A Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department officer died Friday in an off-duty motorcycle crash in Sunrise, authorities said.
Officer Justin Bozeman was pronounced dead at the scene, Sunrise police said. The driver of the car, who was not identified, sustained minor injuries.
Sunrise Police Department officers responded around 10 p.m. Friday to a crash between a motorcycle and a car on the 2400 block of University Drive, a spokesperson said. A Miami-Dade corrections officer was riding the motorcycle and crashed with the vehicle while it was making a left turn.
Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation identified the officer as Bozeman, who joined the department in 2011. He contributed to several key assignments, including the Monitored Release Bureau and Boot Camp, and he served as a member of their Honor Guard, the department said.
The department posted Saturday on Instagram that Bozeman’s “commitment to this profession and to this department was steady and sincere.”
“Our hearts are with Officer Bozeman’s family, friends and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement said. “We extend our deepest condolences and will continue to keep his loved ones lifted in our thoughts and prayers.”
MDCR Director Sherea Green said the Sunrise Police Department is conducting a full investigation into the incident. No additional information was available.
In recent months, there have been several Miami-Dade officers injured or killed in motorcycle crashes. Two Miami police motorcycle officers were hospitalized in January after a crash on the Dolphin Expressway. Miami Beach officer David Cajuso, 33, died in October after he crashed his motorcycle on the Interstate 75 extension near Hialeah.
