Miami Beach officer dies in motorcycle crash on I-75, cops say. He was a father of 3
A Miami Beach officer died after police say he crashed his motorcycle on the Interstate 75 extension near Hialeah late Tuesday morning.
The crash happened around 11:30 a.m. near the Northwest 138th Street exit, the Miami Beach Police Department said.
Miami Beach Police Chief Wayne Jones identified the officer at a press conference Tuesday afternoon as 33-year-old David Cajuso. The 10-year-veteran leaves behind three young children, ages 2, 3 and 5 and a wife, Jones said.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue told the Herald that paramedics airlifted Cajuso to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Hundreds of police officers and firefighters from South Florida law-enforcement agencies flanked the entrance to Ryder Trauma Center on Tuesday afternoon.
“I am humbled by all the other officers who came here from other organizations who came here to show support for David and his family and for the Miami Beach Police Department,” Jones said.
A Miami Beach City Commission meeting set for Wednesday was canceled due to Cajuso’s death.
“The City extends its deepest condolences to Officer Cajuso’s family, loved ones, and colleagues during this difficult time,” the announcement read.
In an email to constituents, Commissioner David Suarez said he will be reaching out to Cajuso’s family to offer assistance.
The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
