10-year-old boy struck by van while crossing a street near Broward school, police say
A 10-year-old boy was struck by a van while crossing the street near Coral Springs Elementary School on Tuesday morning, according to authorities.
Around 8 a.m., the boy was crossing West Sample Road in a marked crosswalk when a white Ford van hit him at the Northwest 110th Avenue intersection, Coral Springs Sgt. Ernesto Bruna told the Miami Herald.
“It appears he was walking next to the bicycle, heading north toward the school,” Bruna said.
School starts at 8:30 a.m. at Coral Springs Elementary; breakfast at the school starts at 7:50 a.m.
A Palm Beach County Fire Rescue helicopter took the child to Broward Health Medical Center, Coral Springs Fire Rescue said in a Facebook post.
“Luckily, it appears he is going to be OK,” Bruna said.
Bruna said the driver, a man, remained at the crash site. He said investigators are interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance cameras.
“As of now, there are no signs of impairment but it is still being investigated,” Bruna said.
The name and condition of the child were not immediately known. Broward County Public Schools declined to say whether the child attends Coral Springs Elementary.
“Due to student privacy, we make it a practice not to confirm student enrollment,” Broward schools spokeswoman Keyla Concepción told the Herald in an email Tuesday.
First responders blocked Sample Road at Coral Springs Drive so a rescue helicopter could land. Coral Springs Drive was reopened around 8:45 a.m., Coral Springs police said.
