A beloved University of Miami student was killed while riding his scooter to the Coral Gables campus Monday, according to the school.

Daniel “Danny” Bishop was a senior majoring in mathematics and psychology, the university said in a statement to students, staff and alumni Tuesday.

“Danny was a consummate student leader who had an incredible enthusiasm for his many involvements, including President’s 100, Orientation Leader staff, and chair of Hurricane Productions, one of the largest student organizations at UM,” the statement reads. “Originally from Coral Springs, he left a significant legacy. Danny was a role model, investing in what he loved and working hard to create a caring ‘Cane community.”

Bishop was on the President’s Honor Roll nearly every semester, according to the statement. He had a job waiting for him at Gulliver Preparatory School teaching math.

“His friends shared that Danny was filled with positivity and passion for life. He had incredible ambition and drive and his love for math was inspiring,” the University said. “He was a student leader who would rise by uplifting others. Whatever he did was with authenticity and he cared for everyone he interacted with and tackled each task he undertook with determination.”

Bishop attended Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland — and was a student there during the Feb. 14, 2018, mass shooting that killed 17 people and wounded 17 others, The Miami Hurricane, the university’s student newspaper, reported.
