A 17-year-old boy who died after he was struck by an SUV near his school in Miami Gardens was identified Tuesday as Darion Bramwell.

A black Honda pilot was going east on Northwest 183rd Street (Miami Gardens Drive) when it hit Darion who “ran across the street” near the Miami Gardens Shopping Plaza around 6:52 a.m. Monday, according to Miami Gardens police.

Surveillance video obtained by 7News shows a group of kids exiting a Miami-Dade Metrobus and crossing Miami Gardens Drive. Darion, wearing a white shirt, sees the SUV and begins running forward but the car hits him. Two others run in opposite directions, getting out of harm’s way just in time.

Darion was a student at North Gardens High School, a charter school located in the shopping mall. In a letter to parents, principal Laura Vesga expressed sorrow for the student’s death and emphasized the importance of using crosswalks.

Vesga also said “support specialists” are available to students and families.

“This unforeseen loss has profoundly impacted our entire school community, leaving us in shock and grieving,” Vesga said in the letter. “In the wake of this tragic accident, our team will convene to address the circumstances and continue to work towards implementing preventive measures to avoid similar incidents in the future.”

Darion was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, where they died, police said. The SUV driver remained at the crash site.
