Amid an affordable housing crisis, Miami-Dade County is accepting applications through November 11 to be put on a waiting list for public housing.

This initiative is aimed at providing housing for low-income families, seniors and people with disabilities. The Public Housing and Community Development office manages the 6,000 public housing units in 92 locations in Miami-Dade.

How to apply for public housing in Miami-Dade

Applications for the public housing waiting list can only be completed online until 11:59 p.m. November 11 at www.miamidade.gov/publichousing.

People without access to a computer or the internet can request assistance to complete the application during business hours at various county offices, including Community Action and Human Services in Miami Gardens, Naranja, Edison, Culmer, Florida City and Coconut Grove.

Assistance is also available at the main county library at 101 W. Flagler St., and the Model City - Caleb Library at 2211 NW 54th St. Those with disabilities can receive assistance by calling 786-469-4300.

“We encourage all eligible individuals to apply for this vital opportunity,” said Alex R. Ballina, director of Public Housing and Community Development. “Securing affordable housing can be a turning point for many families, and we remain committed to providing support through every step of the application process.”

After submitting an application, you will receive a confirmation number that you should keep. Acceptance of an application doesn’t automatically put you on the waiting list. Only 7,500 applications will be randomly selected.

Applicants must be over 18 and meet the income requirements of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. For one person, the annual income must not exceed $63,550; for two, $72,650; for three, $81,700; for four, $90,800. Priority will be given to people affected by a natural disaster, homeless people, veterans, victims of domestic violence, and those 62 and older.

Housing crisis in Miami-Dade

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said the county is committed to making sure people have access to safe and affordable housing.

“By opening this wait list, we are taking meaningful action to support our most vulnerable populations — families, seniors, and persons with disabilities — ensuring they have the opportunity for stable housing that provides the foundation for a better quality of life,” Levine Cava said a statement.

Residents of the Miami metro area are the most burdened by the cost of renting in the United States, according to the Census Bureau’s latest Household Pulse Survey, released Oct. 10. Nearly a third of Miami renters spend more than half their income on paying for housing.

The average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Miami is $2,116, according to rental site Apartments.com. That’s 36 percent higher than the national average of $1,557 per month.

Miami-Dade opened applications for Section 8 waiting in February, and more than 70,000 people signed up on the first day alone, hoping to get 5,000 spots available on the federal rent-subsidized program’s list. The last time this window to wait for subsidized housing was opened in the county, in 2021, more than 96,000 applications were received.
