A new landmark: Site of Hollywood’s iconic Bread Building to rise again
Change is coming soon to a well-known Hollywood site abandoned nearly 30 years ago.
The Fort Lauderdale-based developer BTI Partners anticipates launching construction in February on a $110 million project at the former Hollywood Bread Building site, according to Noah Breakstone, the firm’s managing partner and CEO. BTI Partners acquired the nearly 3-acre site at 1747 Van Buren St. in June for $11 million and demolished the old building in the fall.
The unnamed project will bring life to the former Hollywood Bread headquarters founded by Eleanor Hansberry. She oversaw production, packaging and distribution of her product from 1969 until her death in the late 1970s. Hollywood Bread reaped enough profit that it could afford stars like Elizabeth Taylor for its advertising campaigns. But after Hansberry’s death, the company failed by the late 1990s and the building sat vacant.
A 25-story, 362-unit apartment rental building will rise at the site. Units will range from 500-square-foot studios to 1,200-square-foot two bedroom, two bathroom units.
Renters will have a sprawling amenity deck equipped with a pool, Jacuzzi and cabanas overlooking Hollywood Young Circle’s outdoor amphitheater ArtsPark. Inside, the deck will house a kitchenette, lounges and co-working spaces. About six retail spaces will sit on the ground floor.
“Our development will be a key milestone for the revitalization of the east side of Downtown Hollywood, anchored by ArtsPark,” Breakstone said by email. “The old, unoccupied Bread Building had fallen into disrepair over the last couple of decades, and its former site will now become home to the new Bread Building, a landmark for the City of Hollywood.”
The project will be completed in 2023, according to Dan Adache, chairman and founder of Adache Group Architects. Adache and Modis Architects designed the project.
The project is anticipated to attract singles and young couples with its design, Adache said. “This is a contemporary design, a breath of fresh air.”
This story has been updated to reflect that the new building will open in 2023, not 2024, and its largest unit is a two-bedroom, not a three-bedroom.
