Aldi, the discount grocer that hails from Germany, is opening three new South Florida locations this fall.

Stores in Princeton (just north of Homestead), Kendall and Fort Lauderdale will open by December, joining 39 locations already open in Miami-Dade, Broward, and West Palm Beach. Those include a newly opened store in Sunrise.

The expansion is part of the company’s broader plan to debut 70 stores nationwide by year’s end. Aldi is aiming to become the third-largest U.S. grocery chain by late 2022, according to Chris Hewitt, vice president of Aldi’s regional division.

“This pandemic has reinforced how much consumers rely on us to provide the foods and items they want at the lowest possible prices,” Hewitt said by email.

The company ranked eighth in the top 10 global retailers, according to a Deloitte 2019 report. The private company earned about $98 million in 2017. It has seen year-over-year growth in sales in South Florida, Hewitt said by email, but declined to specify the amount.

Since opening its first location in Orlando in 2008, Aldi has grown to a total 152 locations across the state. Six of those were former Lucky’s Market locations, acquired in January.
