One hospitality company is tripling its footprint in Miami Beach and expanding into Hollywood by December.

And, come 2021, it’ll open in Wynwood too.

Sonder, the San Francisco-based, $225 million venture-backed hospitality company, is partnering with different developers and landowners to expand its South Florida offerings. Since launching in 2012, the company operates out of seven locations across Miami and Fort Lauderdale. It wants to continue growing with increasing demand.

Named the “Most Innovative Travel Brand” by Fast Company in 2019, Sonder utilizes technology to provide hotel-like services across all of its locations. Guests can text or call their local Sonder branch to receive basic products, including fresh towels and shower gel.

“Miami is one of the markets where revenue is strong and there are a high density of properties that are of interest to us,” Samuel Artmann, the company’s South Florida market leader and general manager said. A variety of neighborhoods with what Artmann calls “a distinct character,” such as Miami Beach and Wynwood, encourage the team to grow in the region.

Sonder operates out of 26 metro areas across the country and abroad. It has an average rate of $185 per night, said Artmann. The company often partners with landlords in apartment buildings for rent and hotels, agreeing to rent a certain number of units per month. Sonder investors include Jorge Pérez of development firm Related Group, Miami Design District developer Craig Robins and former baseball player Alex Rodriguez.

Come December, Sonder will operate 50 rooms at the newly renovated Abbey Hotel South Beach at 300 21st St., 26 apartment units at 17 West at 1698 Alton Rd. and 20 rooms at 832 Collins, the same building that houses Rainbow Shops.

In Hollywood, it will operate 112 rooms at the CIRC Hotel at Hollywood Circle at 1780 Polk St.

Sonder will operate a fifth location in Wynwood starting summer 2021. Downtown Miami-based real estate private equity team BH Investment Group and New York-based development firm Hogg Holdings will build One Eleven Wynwood Hotel by Sonder at 111 NW 26th St., a block from Wynwood Walls. Construction on the five-story building with 72-hotel suites will begin in early 2020.

The long-term plan for Sonder is to cover 10% to 15% of the South Florida hospitality market, and compete with giants Marriott International and Hyatt.
