‘Deep’ going-out-of-business sales begin at Lucky’s Markets in Florida
Going out of business sales have begun at Lucky’s Market stores in Florida as the chain prepares to close up shop next month.
The only location that will remain open in Florida is in West Melbourne.
Lucky’s Market is known for offering a variety of healthy and locally sourced products including meat, seafood and produce along with prepared foods for a more affordable price. It has its own unique flair. Its shopping carts are customized to support a beer or wine glass so customers can enjoy a drink while shopping.
Liquidation sales reportedly began Wednesday at 25% off with discounts expected to increase as the store’s shutdown day nears.
The “deep” discounts “will allow customers to stock up on some of their favorite Lucky’s products before they are sold out,” Lucky’s Market said in a statement to the Miami Herald Thursday.
Founded in 2003 by chefs Trish and Bo Sharon in Boulder, Colorado, the grocery store has 35 stores in 11 states, according to its website. Twenty-one of those existing stores are in Florida and are expected to close by Feb. 12. Three of them are in Broward County:
▪ 9184 Wiles Rd. in Coral Springs
▪ 1033 E. Oakland Park Blvd. in Oakland Park
▪ 7700 Peters Rd. in Plantation
The only store that will remain open is located at 3170 W. New Haven Avenue in West Melbourne.
About 2,500 employees in Florida will lose their jobs, according to the South Florida Sun Sentinel, which first reported the closures.
The closures comes after supermarket giant Kroger, who began financing Lucky’s Market in 2016, announced in December that it would be divesting its interest in Lucky’s Market after examining the results of a “portfolio review.”
Lucky’s Market says it is also reducing its staff at the company’s support office in Niwot, Colorado.
Fourteen additional stores were expected to open across Florida this year, including in Miami, Dania Beach and two in Boca Raton. Those plans are canceled, the company announced on Instagram Wednesday.
“We are sad to say the rumors are true. We’re closing many of our stores and couldn’t be more upset to be leaving so many communities who have supported us for years,” Lucky’s Market wrote on Instagam. “What we built with you, our loyal customers, was not in vain. You helped contribute to our mission: Good Food For All. We appreciate the many shopping trips you put in and pints of beer you drank in our stores.”
A day later, all of its existing and upcoming Florida locations, except the one in West Melbourne, were wiped from its website.
Besides the store in Melbourne, Lucky’s Market says their stores will remain open in Traverse City, MI; Cleveland, OH; Columbus, OH; Columbia, MO; North Boulder and Fort Collins, CO.
