Would you pay $1,000 for a cup of coffee?
In almost every case, the answer to this question is a resounding “Are you out of your mind?” But during Miami Art Week, when no price is too high and no common commodity too unremarkable to exploit, the query is perfectly natural.
So. Would you? Artist Danny Casale thinks you might. The self-titled “Bad Animator,” also known as Coolman Coffeedan, has joined The Art Plug and Marcel Katz Art to open a Wynwood pop-up shop for Miami Art Week. It’s called Ur Special Coffee and is opening at The Bagel Club Miami.
And the shop will sell world’s most expensive cup of coffee at $1,000 a pop.
Naturally, this isn’t just any old cortadito. Each cup will be made with Superlost Coffee’s new Sidra variety, a swanky bean from Colombia brewed especially for the pop-up. This bean is all class. It sneers at Starbucks and your local roaster. We’re pretty sure it has a membership at the Ocean Reef Club and owns a condo in Aspen.
Each (paper) cup will also feature a one-of-a-kind original artwork by Mr. Coffeedan. Hence the hefty price tag.
Fans can also buy limited edition prints by the artist as well as limited edition Superlost Coffee bags featuring a Coolman Coffeedan screen print.
So why is riding the brown dragon so inspirational to the artist?
“Coffeeshop culture has such a special place in my NYC heart,” Casale/Coffeedan said in a press release. “It’s an atmosphere that inspired so many thought leaders throughout history and influenced culture in beautiful ways.”
And while coffee, bagels and cream cheese rule the day, at 4 p.m. Ur Special Coffee turns its attention to more grown-up beverages (beer, wine and sake) and becomes a futuristic speakeasy.
