Things To Do

We just found a bunch of drive-in movie theaters in South Florida. We’re bored, too

As this quarantine situation drags on, so many of us are desperate for something to do. We’d even gladly be stranded at the drive-in, like John Travolta was so many years ago in “Grease.”

Luckily, South Florida has some options that fit into our new new-normal lifestyle nicely.

We rounded up our fave outdoor destinations where you can get your movie on. Granted, you can’t watch flicks you would normally shell out for at an actual theater in Before Times. Many films are on the older side (hello, “Terminator”) but hey, would you prefer to memorize the cracks in your bedroom wall again? Reminder: In the New Normal, things change in an instant and some of these pop-ups may close faster than you can say Mayor Carlos Gimenez.

Remember when JLo and Shak shook up The Super Bowl? At least this giant Miami Gardens sports venue isn’t going to waste. The sleek new Outdoor Theaters offer two ways to watch films in a socially distanced setting: One is an open-air theater, the other a drive-in. Both show such set-in-Miami classics as “The Bodyguard” and “Casino Royale.”

Carpool Cinema

These days, Wynwood is not for bar-hopping hipsters and art addicts. It’s home to a venue for locals who are literally climbing the walls after months and months of lockdown. Thank goodness for Carpool Cinema, a weekend event open Thursday through Sunday. In a parking lot. We’ll take it. Even if it costs a steep $45 per car.

Swap Shop

Social distancing has never been an issue at this Fort Lauderdale flea market, which was apparently way ahead of the COVID-19 game since 1963. Nothing fancy here. Bring your own food/snacks as no food trucks are on site. There are 13 screens in all, operating 365 days a year rain or shine, but let’s hope quarantine doesn’t last that long. Gates open at 7:30 p.m., movie starts at 8.

Info/tickets: 3291 W. Sunrise Blvd., Fort Lauderdale; 954-791-7927; floridaswapshop.com. Prices: From $10 per space.

Florida City Cinema

“Bring back family outings,” trumpets another prescient open-air spot. We hear you. We want to escape the house with our mini mess makers, too. The cost is just $15 a car at this theater, which offers food vendors and newer movies. Last weekend they played “Jumanji: The Next Level.” We can relate.

Info/tickets: 921 N Krome Ave., Florida City. flcitycinema@gmail.com. Open Thursday to Sunday only. https://www.flcitycinema.com
