Roaches, mold, slime and crust among 36 violations that got a coffee shop shut down
Another light week for The Sick and Shut Down List as far as eating establishments. Not sure if inspectors eased up so places didn’t miss out on July 4 weekend revenue or more restrictions means fewer violations.
Whatever, this is what was presented to us. And, so, we present it to you.
What follows comes from Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation restaurant inspections. If you see something in a restaurant and want it inspected, don’t email us. Go to the DBPR website and file a complaint. We don’t control who gets inspected or how strictly. We report without passion or prejudice, but with a side dish of humor.
Walter’s Coffee Shop aka Walter’s Restaurant, 17009 S. Dixie Hwy., Palmetto Bay: When it came to violations, the inspector came heavy on the volume, light on the details.
Example: “Roach activity present as evidenced by live roaches found.” Nothing about where the roaches hung out or how many scurried about, as on most inspections.
“Dead roaches on premises.” This is like summing up “Pulp Fiction” as “Complications while picking up a briefcase and a watch.”
Or, “Ready-to-eat, time/temperature control for safety, food marked with a date that exceeds seven days after opening/preparation..” What food? How much longer than a week was it out there?
Anyway, if you wanted a cold Coke, looks like you got Coke Mold, seeing as how both the inside of the ice machine and the soda dispensing nozzles had an “accumulation of black/green mold-like substance.”
And, “soda gun holster with accumulated slime/debris.”
Yes, we’ll clown you over crustiness: “Encrusted material on can opener blade,” “Food-contact surfaces encrusted with grease and/or soil deposits,” and ”Interior of microwave soiled with encrusted food debris.
Both the inside of the refrigerator and the inside of the reach-in cooler were “soiled with accumulation of food residue.”
Without soap or a way to dry hands, how much handwashing was going on at the handwash sink?
Walter got itself together for Friday’s re-inspection.
