IKEA recalls 970,000 chests sold over 14 years as tip-over and entrapment hazards
A chest of drawers is the bedroom furniture piece where a child puts stickers and learns about organizing clothes. It shouldn’t be a threat to a child’s health or life, which is why IKEA has recalled 970,000 KULLEN three-drawer chests in the United States and Canada.
The exact problem, as stated in the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall notice: “The recalled chest is unstable if it is not anchored to the wall, posing tip-over and entrapment hazards that may result in death or serious injuries to children.
“Additionally, KULLEN 3-drawer chests imported after Aug. 12, 2019 do not comply with the performance requirements of the updated version of the U.S. consensus standard.”
IKEA knows of six times that chests not anchored to the wall have tipped over. One time caused a “minor cut” and the other time caused “minor cuts and bruises,” the notice said.
This covers model Nos. 600-930-58 (birch), 501-637-54 (black and brown), and 803-221-34 (black and brown). They were sold in brick-and-mortar IKEAs or online from April 2005 to December 2019.
IKEA’s offering an anchor kit or a refund. Those who want to anchor the chests can order a free anchor kit, then do it yourself or take advantage of IKEA’s one-time free installation. If you want a refund, take the chests back to the store or you can arrange for free pickup of the chests.
