The label says ‘GLUTEN FREE.’ It’s not. That’s why it’s been recalled nationwide

A packaging error caused a nationwide food allergy recall of Sierra Soups Pasta e Fagioli soup mix in 13-ounce packages, the Fresno, California, company has announced.

The company-written, FDA-posted recall notice on Monday said “a breakdown in the company’s packaging process” caused the mix, which contains gluten, to be sent out in plastic packaging that screams “GLUTEN FREE (Without Pasta).”

For those allergic to gluten or trying to eat gluten-free foods, this can be more than a minor inconvenience. As the notice states, “People who have allergies to gluten run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.”

Mix production has been suspended while Sierra Soups looks into how this happened.

Consumers can return the soup mix to the store of purchase for a full refund. Anyone with questions can call 559-387-0552, Monday through Friday, noon to 8 p.m. Eastern time, or email info@sierrafoods.com.
